Three Lights, Like a Studio
The three-light rig — a key, a fill and a rim — is old, standard and almost universal, and the reason is that it separates three questions that would otherwise fight each other: where the light comes from, how dark the shadows get, and whether the subject is distinct from the background. One light each, and each can be adjusted without undoing the others.
What the three are for
The key is the light. It sets the direction, it produces the shadows, and it is the one the eye reads as the source. Everything about the mood of a portrait — dramatic, flat, sculpted, soft — is first a statement about where the key is and how big it is. If only one light is available, it is this one.
The fill does not create its own shadows; it lifts the ones the key made. Placed roughly opposite the key and set lower, it decides how much you can see in the dark side of the face. The ratio between key and fill is the contrast of the portrait, and it is a more useful control than any contrast slider, because it changes the lighting rather than the image.
The rim sits behind the subject and catches the edge — the top of a shoulder, the outline of hair. It does almost nothing to the front of the face and an enormous amount to the sense that the subject occupies space rather than being pasted onto a background. It is the light people forget and then cannot unsee.
Power is measured in stops for a reason
Brightness is perceived roughly logarithmically, which makes a linear brightness slider close to unusable. The bottom half of the travel does almost nothing visible, the top half goes from correct to blown out in a centimeter, and the useful range hides in a sliver you cannot land on reliably.
A stop is a doubling. Moving one stop up doubles the light, one stop down halves it, and equal movements of the slider produce equal-looking changes across its whole range. It is also the unit photographers already think in, so a rig described as a key at nothing and a fill two stops down is a description that transfers directly out of the app and into a studio, or in from one.
Distance does more than you expect
Light falls off with the square of distance. Move a lamp twice as far away and the subject gets a quarter as much. That single fact is why moving a light in and out is a creative control and not just a brightness control.
A light close to a face is at very different distances from the near cheek and the far one, so it falls off steeply across the face: bright where it lands, dark quickly, sculpted. Pull the same light back and increase its power to compensate, and the front and back of the head are now at nearly the same distance from it, so the falloff across the face nearly vanishes and the light goes even and flat. Same direction, same brightness on the subject, completely different photograph. Sunlight is the limiting case — so far away that it produces no falloff across a scene at all.
Dragging a light across the photo moves it in the plane. Pinching moves it along the axis into the scene, which is the control that has no equivalent in a flat photo editor and the one that does the most.
Size is the shadow control
A light's size does not change its brightness so much as the character of its edges. A small source is close to a point, so a given spot is either in shadow or not, and the boundary is abrupt. A large source is seen partially from the boundary region — some of it hidden, some visible — so the transition is gradual and wide.
This is why a window on an overcast day flatters people and a bare bulb does not, and it is why studio lights are put inside boxes of fabric. It is also, usefully, a diagnostic: a small light draws a hard shadow edge that shows you precisely where the app thinks an object ends, which is the fastest way to find out whether the depth behind the photo is any good.
Warmth, and mixing colors
Real sources have a color. Tungsten is orange, an overcast sky is blue, and the eye is so used to compensating that it mostly does not notice until two of them appear in the same frame. Then it notices immediately, and reads the difference as depth and time of day.
The classic use is a warm key and a cooler fill, which reads as sunlight with sky bouncing back into the shadows. Reverse it for the look of a room lit from outside. It is a small control with a large effect on where a photograph seems to have been taken.
The rim lighting the wall is not a bug
A frequent surprise: put a rim light behind the subject and the wall behind them brightens. This is correct. The rim is between the subject and the wall, the wall faces it, and a real lamp in that position would light it exactly so. Nothing has gone wrong; the scene is behaving.
The fix is the one a photographer would use — lower the power, or bring the light forward until it is level with the subject so its throw goes past rather than onto the wall. Which is the point of building on real depth in the first place: when something unexpected happens, the reason is usually physical, and so is the remedy.
