Depth & Light II

Depth & Light showed how a photo’s depth map is enough to light the scene again. Then the source of the app built on it was lost, and Rake was rebuilt from what survived — as Rake Plus, with more done by depth than lighting: fog, haze taken out, focus moved after the shot, a grade by distance, rain and snow, light through a window, and a photograph that moves. Eight articles, one a week, each with the test that decided whether the tool was worth building, and one that decided it was not.

01 Starting Again from a Binary The source of Rake 1.0 was lost; a shader pulled out of a debug build, doc comments and interface strings, and an engine rebuilt to match its GPU to its CPU within 1/255.
