Frequently asked questions

What do I actually do? I never press the button.

That is the game. The hero runs right by itself, and the tape under the level presses its one button for it. The tape never changes. What you change is the level: drag a piece from the tray at the bottom into one of the dotted zones, then tap Run. If the run reaches the exit, the puzzle is solved.

How do I read the tape?

It is lined up with the level above it, metre for metre, and faint bands rise through the level wherever the button is held. For a hero where the length of a hold matters — the ship, the wave, the robot and others — each hold is a bar. For a hero where only the press matters, it is a tick where the press starts. The line at the top of the screen says what the button does to the hero you are playing, and the card that opens each world explains it once.

A piece will not go where I drop it.

Pieces go on the grid of points inside a dotted zone, and snap to the nearest one. A piece drawn in red, with a dashed outline, is somewhere it cannot go, and letting go of it sends it back to the tray. To move a placed piece, drag it; to take it back, drag it off the zones. The eraser at the top right clears the board.

My run failed. What now?

The burst marks where the hero died, the dotted trail shows the path it took, and the line at the bottom says what killed it and how far it got. Tap Edit to go back to building with your pieces where you left them, move one, and run it again. There is no limit on runs and nothing is lost by failing.

I am stuck. Is there a hint?

The lightbulb at the top right places one piece of a solution each time you tap it, moving anything of yours that is in its way. It costs nothing, and a puzzle solved with hints counts as solved.

Is every puzzle actually solvable? Is there only one answer?

Every puzzle ships with a solution that is replayed automatically on every build of the game, so none of them is impossible. But that solution is only one of many: any placement that gets the run to the exit solves the puzzle. There is no par and no score.

This puzzle has two rows on the tape.

It has two tapes, each read by its own hero, and the same pieces have to carry both. Run plays the first tape and then the second, and the puzzle is solved only when both reach the exit. Each row is labelled with the hero that reads it.

Are any worlds locked?

No. All twelve worlds are open from the first launch, and each opens at the first puzzle you have not yet solved. The dots at the top of a puzzle let you jump to any other puzzle in its world. There is nothing to buy.

Do I need to be online?

No, and you cannot be. Milo Builder has no networking code at all: no accounts, no leaderboards, no sign-in, nothing to connect to. It works the same in airplane mode on the first launch as at any other time.

How do I turn the sound off?

Milo Builder's sound follows your device: the Ring/Silent switch silences it, and it plays alongside your own music rather than stopping it. If you have Reduce Motion on in iOS, the board does not shake when something explodes.

Is there an iPad version? A Mac or Apple Vision Pro one?

Milo Builder is one app for iPhone and iPad, in landscape on both. It is not offered on the Mac or on Apple Vision Pro.

I lost my progress after reinstalling.

Progress lives in the app's own settings on your device, so deleting the app deletes it. A device backup that included Milo Builder restores it with the app; without one there is no copy anywhere for us to give back, because nothing is ever sent off the device. There is more detail on the privacy page.

Anything else

If something is broken, tell us what device you are on, which world and puzzle you were in, and what happened. If a run did something you did not expect, say which pieces you had placed and where — that is usually enough to find it.
