Privacy Policy

The short version

Hindcast has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no servers of ours. The coordinates of a place go to Apple Weather so it can send the forecast, and a place's name goes to Apple's map search when you look one up. Everything else, your saved places and the record of how the forecast held up, stays on your device.

What the app uses

Hindcast shows weather forecasts. It has no accounts, no advertising and no analytics, and it contains no third-party tracking code. What it does use:

  • Your location. If you allow it, Hindcast uses your device's location once, when you open the app or refresh, to show the weather where you are. You can decline, and add places by name instead.
  • Places you save. The places you add are stored on your device, and in the app's shared storage used by its widgets. They are not sent to us. We do not run a server.

Who receives data

  • Apple Weather. To show a forecast, the app sends the coordinates of a place (yours, or one you saved or searched for) to Apple's WeatherKit service and receives the forecast. Apple handles that data under its own privacy policy.
  • Apple Maps search. When you search for a place by name, your search text is sent to Apple's map search to find it, under Apple's privacy policy.

Nothing is sent to anyone else. We do not sell or share personal data, and we cannot identify you: we never receive your location, your places or your searches.

What we keep

Nothing. We operate no servers and have no copy of your data. The forecast is cached briefly on your device (typically 12 to 15 minutes) to save requests, and typical weather values for a place are kept on your device for up to a month.

The forecast record

To show how the forecast held up, Hindcast saves, for each place you open, the forecast it loaded and the temperature and conditions it read each time. This record stays on your device, is kept for about 60 days, and can be exported by you as a CSV file. It is deleted when you remove the place or the app.

Notifications about forecast changes

If you turn on forecast-change notifications or the morning brief, the app keeps a small note on your device of what the last forecast said for each place, to compare with the next one. Nothing about it leaves your device.

Purchases

Hindcast Pro is bought through Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment and tells the app whether the subscription is active; we receive no payment details, no Apple Account information and no purchase history, and we run no server that could.

Notifications

Rain, golden-hour and blue-hour notifications and the morning brief are scheduled on your device from the forecast the app has already loaded. They are not sent from a server, and the app asks your permission first.

Live Activities and widgets

Widgets and the rain Live Activity show weather already stored on your device by the app (a small copy for each saved place, in storage shared between the app and its widgets). They do not contact any server themselves.

Apple Watch

If you have an Apple Watch paired to your iPhone, the app sends it the weather for the place on screen and whether Hindcast Pro is active, directly from the iPhone to the Watch through Apple's Watch connection. Nothing goes through a server of ours.

Children

Hindcast collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
