Frequently asked questions

What do the three tally marks mean?

How steady the next hours look. Hindcast reads the forecast's chances of rain hour by hour: when they sit near 0% or 100% the marks are full, and when they hover in the middle the forecast could go either way and there are fewer. Tap the marks for the reason in words. They are a first rule, not a promise.

Does Hindcast have radar?

No, and it says so. The Horizon and the Almanac's layer map are drawn from forecasts at a few sampled points (along the line you pick, or across a 25-point grid), not from radar. They show when a band of rain is forecast to reach you, not where it is right now.

Where does the weather come from?

Apple Weather. Hindcast uses Apple's WeatherKit service for every forecast and credits it on every screen. Apple's data sources are listed at weatherkit.apple.com/legal-attribution.html. Official weather alerts, where Apple provides them, appear at the top of Today with a link to the source.

What does "warmer than usual" compare with?

The typical high for that date at that place. Hindcast also shows the typical high and low for every month, and, from the record it keeps on your device, the last 30 days of highs once it has a few days of readings.

Why are the units in °F or °C?

They follow your device's region: °F, mph and inches in the US, °C, km/h and millimetres elsewhere. With Hindcast Pro you can choose temperature, wind and rain units yourself in Settings.

Which time zone do the times use?

The place's own. A forecast for Tokyo reads in Tokyo time even when you are somewhere else, so "rain from 6 PM" means 6 PM there.

What does Hindcast Pro cost, and how do I subscribe?

Hindcast Pro is an optional yearly subscription, US$9.99 a year in the US; other storefronts are priced by Apple. Tap the lock beside any Pro feature, or Get Hindcast Pro in the menu. It renews every year unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends, and you manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. Everything described as free on this site stays free.

I subscribed on another device, or reinstalled. How do I get Pro back?

Open the Hindcast Pro screen and tap Restore purchases. It uses the Apple Account you are signed in with.

Rain notifications are not arriving.

Check, in order: Settings has Rain notifications switched on; iOS Settings › Notifications › Hindcast allows them; the place is one you saved (or your current location) and rain is actually due in the next hours; and no Focus is silencing them. They are planned on your device from the last forecast Hindcast loaded and refreshed a few times a day when your device allows, so open the app to refresh. They are a forecast heads-up, not radar.

The report card says it is still keeping the record.

The report card compares what each day was forecast to be the day before with what Hindcast read while it was running. WeatherKit has no past days, so the record builds from the day you first open a place; give it a couple of days of use. It stays on your device, and you can export it as a spreadsheet from the report card.

How do I point a widget at a particular place?

With Hindcast Pro, touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget and choose a saved place (or My location). Without a choice, a widget follows the place you last looked at in the app. The widgets read what the app last loaded, so open Hindcast to refresh them.

What does a trip show after ten days?

Forecasts reach ten days ahead. Later days in a trip show the typical weather for that month at the place, and are marked as typical, so you can tell a forecast from an average.

Is there a Mac or Vision Pro version? What about the Apple Watch?

Hindcast is an app for iPhone and iPad, with a companion Apple Watch app. There is no Mac or Vision Pro version. The Watch app shows the place you last looked at on your iPhone; open Hindcast on the iPhone to refresh it. The Hindcast complication for your watch face is part of Hindcast Pro.

How do I delete my data?

Remove a place to delete its forecast record, or delete the app to delete everything it keeps on your device. There is nothing on our side to delete: we run no servers. See the Privacy Policy.

Anything else

If something is wrong, tell us which device and iOS version you are on, which place you were looking at, what you expected and what you saw. A screenshot helps. Weather is Apple's, so a forecast that looks wrong is worth reporting with the place and the time.
