The app is showing Photos' playback copy, and it says so above the controls. That happens when it can't see the original file: photo access was declined, or limited access leaves that clip out. Tap the button in that notice — "Open the Original", "Allow This Clip" or "Allow Access in Settings" — and the clip reopens with every frame.
To reach a clip's original file. The system picker on its own hands over a playback copy of a slow-motion clip with seven frames in eight missing. Limited access is enough: allow only the clips you want to open. See the privacy policy.
Choose the angle tool, drag the first arm out from the vertex, then drag the second. The reading sits by the vertex and is measured on the picture as it was filmed, not as the screen squashes it. Arms within 3° of level or plumb snap to it. With no tool chosen, drag any handle to adjust it.
The timer reads the file's own clock. On a camera's slow-motion original that is real time. On a clip whose slow motion was baked into an ordinary-speed file — an edit, a download, a clip sent through a messenger — it reads playback time, which is several times longer. Open the original from your library for real airtime.
Open the first clip, press Compare at the top right and choose the second. Put each on the same moment with its own slider — the pop, the take-off — and press "Link at These Frames". From then on one slider moves both, and the arrows by A and B nudge one clip a frame against the other. "Overlay" at the top lays one over the other.
Press the microphone at the top right and talk while you step through, draw and zoom. Press Stop on the bar over the picture, then Play to hear it back in step with the picture. A phone call or an alarm stops the recording and keeps what you'd said before it. With AirPods connected, the app records through them.
The Pencil draws with the tool you've chosen, or freehand with none, while your fingers scrub, select and zoom. Double-tap or squeeze does what you've set for the Pencil in Settings: switch back to the tool before, undo the last drawing in place of an eraser, or step to the next colour in place of the palette.
Everything is free at full quality, with no limit on clips or frames: every tool, stills, videos at every speed, comparing two clips on screen, and recording and replaying a voiceover. Videos from the free version carry a small mark in the corner. One payment of $19.99 takes the mark off and exports comparisons and voiceovers as one video. It is shared with your family, with no subscription and no account. If you've bought it before, "Restore Purchase" on the unlock screen finds it.
They're kept on your device with the clip they were drawn on, and come back when you open that clip again. Drawings made on Photos' playback copy of a slow-motion clip aren't kept, because its frames aren't the original's: open the original and draw there.
